Immaculate in its design, I enjoyed exploring Copenhagen’s cobble-stoned streets and bike-riddled roads. The Tivoli Gardens provided a beautiful cultural oasis in the middle of the city, yet glimpses of Copenhagen’s edgier side seemed to consistently find a way to peek through this curated image. 

The perfect example of this was experienced during a day trip I took to Christiania, the city’s “Green Light District”. A former abandoned military base, it was taken over by a group of hippies in the 1970s and today remains a relatively autonomous community independent of the Danish government. Set against the polished background of the rest of the city this contrast presents an interesting duality, both of which are worth exploring in their entirety.
