How to keep the peace at Thanksgiving dinner

We made it guys...it’s officially turkey week! While we are of course obligated to acknowledge that the premise behind Thanksgiving is trash (thanks for nothing colonizers!), the one positive thing that does come out of this holiday is the opportunity to spend some quality time with friends and family.

But as we all know, every time you get a room full of folks together there is the potential for something crazy to come flying out of that one problematic person’s mouth, and then all hell breaks loose. While sometimes it is definitely fun to spectate and mind your plate while everyone else argues, we’ve all been through too much stress trying to survive this never-ending pandemic to be dealing with all that mess this year. So in order to keep the peace, we’ve compiled a useful list of topics that you should definitely avoid at this year’s thanksgiving dinner.

Politics: Let’s be honest, at this point no one is really changing their mind on where they stand in the political divide. So it’s best for everyone’s sanity to just avoid getting into a debate about the dismal state of world politics.

Religion: Dinnertime is definitely not the place to get into a philosophical discussion about who believes what. Hopefully everyone at the table can agree that religious intolerance is tired...but just to play it extra safe, it’s better to avoid this topic altogether.

Money: The pandemic hit many of us hard financially. But when that one relative who always wants to school everyone on the latest cryptocurrency gets going, that is the perfect time to change the subject. 

Vaccines: We are all extremely fatigued on the back and forth about this particular topic of discussion, so let's all simply agree to let everyone make their own decisions and deal with whatever consequences may come.

Relationships: This is the year to finally tell your aunties to mind their own business and stop harassing you about your relationship status...respectfully.

Your body: Sometimes the best response to anyone who is attempting to body shame you is to simply ignore them, get up, and fix yourself another plate.
