Women’s World Cup brings joy, upsets and dramatic goals

As summer continues to fly by, the Women’s World Cup has been doing an amazing job of filling the football-shaped void that we typically have around this time of year. And in true big tournament fashion, there has been no shortage of drama! The just concluded group stages have served us with more upsets, wild goals and joyous moments than we could have ever imagined. So as we take a quick breather before the knockout stages kick off, here is a quick recap of our favorite moments so far!
We have to start with the tournament’s rising star Linda Caicedo! The incredibly talented Colombian 18 year-old snatched the world’s attention when she scored this delicious goal. We can’t wait to see what she does next!
South Africa’s national team, known fondly as Banyana Banyana, gave us chills with their pre-game rendition of “Hamba Wena” [Go well].
Jamaica’s national team, the Reggae Girlz, had quite a journey before they even arrived at the World Cup having to crowdfund in order to meet the costs. Against all odds, the young team held an experienced Brazil to a 0-0 draw making history as the first Caribbean nation to advance to the knockout stages of the tournament.
Panama’s Marta Cox scored an outstanding and emotional goal to open up the scoring for her nation. Having lost her mother to cancer just a few months before, it was heartwarming to see how much it meant to her to score at the highest level of the game and honor the memory of her loved one.
Morocco was another nation who caused a major upset, rounding off a historic group stage for Africa that saw three nations advancing to the knockout stages for the first time. Their reaction when they found out that they’d done enough to advance is an example of why we love this game so much!
