A year ago, his name might have been lost in the headlines. But at this year’s US Open, Frances Tiafoe reintroduced himself to the crowds and avid followers of international tennis tournaments.
The 24-year old athlete indeed played his heart out and reminded the world of his grandeur while drawing in new and old fans who became invested in his fate during the 2022 US Open. His journey would unfortunately end with a loss against Carlos Alcaraz (who went on to win the tournament) in an incredible 4 hour, 19 minutes semi final match on Friday September 9.
Drawing attention with his remarkable game, undeniable presence, and talent, Tiafoe gained the support of millions of people and tennis fans around the world. Celebrities such as NBA players LeBron James, Bradley Beal and former First Lady Michelle Obama who attended the semi final match showed their support to the young man, shedding light on his prowess for those unfamiliar with his name.
“Obviously I would have loved to win tonight,” Tiafoe said. “But I think tennis won tonight.” Despite the loss, Tiafoe did make a huge impact on the tennis world bringing on new interest to the game. More than a remarkable athlete, he is an entertainer who can get the crowds on the edge of their seats for hours. His magic on the court is sometimes more satisfying than thinking of the final win.
Son of immigrant parents from Sierra Leone, Tiafoe’s rise to fame is a story like no other. By the age of fifteen, Frances was already one of the best players of his generation. Today, he is ranked number nineteen in the world and there is no doubt that his name will stay in the hearts of tennis fans, and headlines for many tournaments to come.
